The dolls weren’t the only thing designed to terrorize audiences. “The Unholy” used 10 heads and bodies, which were interchanged according to what was happening in the storyline. The idea was to speak to the history of the creepy dolls of cinema, referencing Annabelle from “The Conjuring” franchise, “Chucky” and a number of scary ventriloquist dolls. The production designer went through four iterations of the figurine during the concept stage before settling on the final scale - close to the size of a real infant that could be cradled. ![]() It had a porcelain head, hands, and feet, with a wooden pegged body because certain things needed to be carved into the body.” “Ours had to be cracked,” she says, “because the script required that. Though typical kern babies were woven from corn or wheat stalks, Abbott referenced Queen Anne dolls, with elongated faces and bright rosy cheeks, which were in fashion in England in the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Is it a miracle or something far more sinister? “The reasoning,” Spiliotopoulos explains, “was when you put an impossible date on the tomb of an evil thing, that thing cannot come back because that date will never come to pass.”ĭesperate for a news story, Fenn breaks the kern baby to “free the spirit.” Not long after, Alice, played by Cricket Brown, is able to hear after a “miraculous visit” from the Virgin Mary. The date connects to a tombstone in South Carolina on a witch’s grave. The baby is wrapped and chained with an impossible date of Feb. The idea, says director Evan Spiliotopoulos, was “that the dolls would absorb all the negative energy in the field, and everything would be cleansed.” The film is an adaptation of James Herbert’s 1983 horror novel “Shrine,” about a tree with magical powers that cures people. It was production designer Felicity Abbott’s job to fashion them, part of a Scottish tradition among Celtic farmers who would bury the totems at the end of their fields to bring good luck. The kern babies in Sony Pictures’ “ The Unholy” might very well join the realm of creepiest movie dolls when the movie is released in theaters on Good Friday, April 2. ![]() Inside, the hybrid loses slight amounts of interior capacity. It shares their vaguely Model 3-like front end styling, and gets a full digital gauge display as standard, while it’s an option on other models. The Escape hybrid doesn’t vary much in other ways from the gas-powered Escapes. That would also land in a competitive spot against the upcoming Honda CR-V Hybrid. Final EPA numbers still are in the offing, though engineers told Green Car Reports that they expect to equal or better the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid’s 40-mpg EPA combined rating. It’s as close as Ford has come to a penalty-free hybrid. It’s quiet, too, at least in Titanium trim, where the active noise cancellation that comes with all Escape hybrids gets augmented by laminated acoustic glass. ![]() It steered with crisp response, and its ride felt nearly as well-controlled as the 250-hp car we’d driven the day before. Those soaring fuel-economy numbers are nearly the only clue that the SE Sport Hybrid we sampled was a hybrid. With the delayed rise of engine revs to prods of the accelerator, the powertrain behaved, in some ways, like early Chevy Volts and the late, unloved Cadillac ELR-all to the Escape’s fuel-economy benefit. The ‘L’ button’s regen helped us game the powertrain over the 40-mpg barrier easily, as often as we could engage it on downhill stretches. The complex software managing these mechanicals-and the battery’s charge-in the 2020 Escape Hybrid call on the gas engine less than the C-Max or Escape Hybrid.Īs we slung the hybrid through Kentucky back roads, the engine’s gruff note came on episodically rather than constantly. The eCVT uses a motor that couples with the engine via a planetary gear, like the setup in the Toyota Prius. Through a redeveloped electronic CVT and front- or all-wheel drive (no through-the-road AWD, engineers say, for reasons of efficiency), Ford draws a net of 200 hp from the Escape’s new hybrid drivetrain, with 152 lb-ft of torque from the gas engine alone. The pack’s cells are supplied by Panasonic, in a briefcase-sized parcel that sits below the rear passenger seat.Įngineers have used the occasion not just to switch from nickel metal hydride batteries to lithium-ion, but to rely on that battery pack far more often to supplant the gas engine for efficiency that approaches that of the former C-Max Hybrid. Today we’re besting that with the non-plug-in Hybrid, which pairs an electric motor with a 2.5-liter inline-4 and a 1.1-kwh lithium-ion battery pack. With either of the new hybrid models, that number rises by at least 30 percent in combined driving. Fuel economy of up to 30 mpg combined emanates from the front-drive turbo-3. ![]() Gas-only 2020 Escapes come with either a 180-hp turbo-3 engine or a 250-hp turbo-4 coupled to an 8-speed automatic that channels power to the front wheels or to all four wheels. Made from the same top-notch materials, it marries a water-resistant nylon shell with a durable 70d polyester liner and a hard-wearing webbing shoulder strap. The smaller sibling to Chrome’s best-selling Kadet sling, it comes in at a little over half the size, boasting some 5L of storage compared to the original’s 9. While the brand offers a suite of spectacular cross-body bags, we’re especially fond of the Mini Kadet you see before you. Select 1: Cyclists need not be left out of the sling bag conversation - at least while Chrome Industries is around. What follows are what we consider to be the best all-around sling bags for EDC, broken down into our top three picks and followed by an editor’s pick as well as an honorable mention. Now that you’ve got a handle on what a sling can add to your carry, it’s time to take a look at what the market has to offer. And they’re the perfect size for more grueling day hikes where you might not want a back-suffocating bulky backpack weighing you down, but you still want to carry some incidentals, snacks, and the like. That means, while this type of cross-body bag is perhaps more common in the streetwear scene, many of them can perform just as well out on the trails. But it still needs to be said that sling bags offer a similar amount of versatility, especially those made from tougher materials like ballistic nylon or Dyneema. Versatility: We can’t rightfully say that backpacks don’t offer versatility. Sure, you could just turn your backpack around as well, but that doesn’t look very good and it’s quite inconvenient and cumbersome. However, since sling bags are easy to shift from your back to your front, you can keep a closer eye on them with less overall effort and awkwardness. That can be the perfect opportunity, especially in crowded spaces like subways or elevators, for a pickpocket to quietly steal things from inside your bag. That means, unless you’re an owl or some kind of high-tech cyborg, you’re not going to be able to keep your eyes on it at all times. Security: The biggest security risk in regards to backpacks is actually built into their name: you wear them on your back. It’s also easy to access all the compartments without having to physically take the bag off, which can make all the difference in a pinch. By contrast, sling bags have a single cross-body strap, which lets the wearer quickly shift the bag from back to front (and back again) without having to remove it. However, they can be a chore to access in a speedy fashion, as gaining access requires the wearer to take the bag off one or both shoulders in order to unzip the bag’s various compartments. Speed: For longer excursions, a backpack - with its dual shoulder straps - is a pretty great way to manage and spread out the weight of whatever you’re carrying. In these cases, where you really only need a few EDC essentials, a sling bag - which is typically between 1-10L, usually on the lower end of the spectrum - is much more manageable and reasonable to utilize. However, if you’re leaving the bulky stuff at home - perhaps you’re going to lunch, meeting up with friends, or just wandering about the city - you’ll find your backpack has a lot of extra, unused space. If you’re hauling around books, a laptop computer, perhaps a lunch bag, and more, that size is quite manageable and makes it easy to get from place to place with your full loadout. ![]() ![]() Size: Most backpacks, especially those that play off of classic book bags, tend to hover in the 10-20L arena. As such, we’ve taken the time to outline some of the metrics that make sling bags stand apart from their brethren with the hopes of helping illuminate their value and making your search for the perfect sling bag all the simpler. Well, we’ve already mentioned a couple of the reasons - size, security, and speed - but there’s more to it than just those simple mentions. ![]() If you already own a backpack (or a few backpacks), you might be wondering why you’d want to swap it out for a far smaller cross-body bag. In each Level there is Variety and Difficulty in terms of jumps. The Graphics are to settle in a fairly good Mediocrity and the different Sections in the Game are well designed. When you combine all The Mechanics together, they feel so good and the Handling of The Entershake works well, too. In addition, rocket boots are introduced a little later, with which you can perform long jumps and save yourself from difficult Situations. The Highest Level is 3 times, after which you can't hold on. Later you will find other Crystals that allow you to use the Enterhooks more often. The Gameplay with the Mechanics of The Enterhook in Connection with the Jumps works quite well, even if there are some Errors from time to time, in which, for Example, the Enterhook is simply not displayed, even though you are close enough to the Object. In the same Level, he finds a few Boulders further a mysterious Crystal, which grants him to use an Enterhook with which he can hold on to most Surfaces. He finds out that he can jump higher with the Suit and much further than he could on his own. From here onwards, the right Gemaplayelement of the Game begins. He lands on a floating Rock, and tries the Suit straight. Since his Uncle Fred is missing for a longer time, he sets out with the Suit there in Search of him. Later, as he will learn, he finds himself in the inner interior of the Earth. He goes into Fred'S Starry Observatory, and is hurled into the Sky. ![]() In the Story, the Father finds a Suit that his Uncle Fred apparently made, which suits him perfectly. While mastering this Spider-Man-like potential, the hero encounters various non-hostile NPCs and environment, the only menacing obstacle in the game is a one-eyed worm, lurking in one of the caves. ![]() The core gameplay features are the energetic costume giving its owner the ability to jump higher and use the grappling hook, and various updates to this outfit, for example, jetpack boots. There is no series of this game: it is the only title in the IP by Gone North also known as Goat Simulator creators. A Story About My Uncle is a first-person adventure with a heavy focus on moving using a grappling hook and a non-violent approach thus making the plot and landscapes the critical focus of the gaming experience. Once rehydrated, place your plant in a shaded area of your house, away from windows and other windy locations. In the case of a severe lack of moisture and nutrients, you might also have to consider using adequate fertilizers or plunging the pot in water. Solutions to underwatering – rescuing under-watered plants can be tricky. In any case, you should attend the issue promptly, to avoid the development of infections and fungi.Ĭopyright article owner is for this article. However, it is essential to understand that watering stress can derive from a single episode as well as a prolonged habit. Solutions vary depending on the cause behind the drooping leaves. In any case, if you notice your Fiddle Leaf Fig tree’s leaves to start wilting and drooping, you should assess the state of the soil and the plant’s need for water. In turn, they are no longer able to absorb the necessary nutrients from the soil, an issue that will result in drooping leaves, among other symptoms. This condition affects the roots of your plant, weakening them. Too much moisture stagnating within the soil is the primary cause of root rot. Overwatering – overwatering can be just as dangerous for your plant’s health as underwatering.Other symptoms of this condition include the soil pulling away from the sides of the container and dry potting mix. Therefore, the Fiddle Leaf Fig will appear wilted and drooping. Underwatering – since you are not supplying enough nutrients to the soil, the plant is lacking the necessary moisture to sustain the growth of leaves.Stress derived from insufficient or excessive watering, also known as drought stress, can stop the plant from absorbing the necessary nutrients from the soil. Unlike you might think, your plant might be suffering from overwatering, as well as underwatering. Improper watering is another major cause of drooping leaves. Do not underestimate the effects that a change in humidity or light exposure can have on your plant. Ultimately, you should always allow for a transition period and enough time for your plant to adapt to the new environment. If this happens, consider picking a spot that is similar to the one the plant is in now. However, in some cases, you might need to move your plant somewhere else. However, luckily, you can restore its look by returning to the original routine for your Fiddle Leaf Fig. Indeed, the Ficus Lyrata is extremely susceptible to a variety of elements, which include:Ī change in any of the factors can influence the health of your plant. If you are transitioning your plant into a new room or area of the house, you can expect to see some variations in the foliage and health of a Fiddle Leaf Fig tree. If this eventuality, you will need to supplement your plant with a fertilizer that can increase the levels of essential compounds such as nitrogen and phosphorus.Įnvironmental changes can cause your plant to suffer the effects of stress. Other symptoms of this condition can include stunted growth, foliage breakage, and discoloration of the leaves. ![]() If the youngest leaves at the top seem pale and not gaining strength, this could be a sign of nutrient deficiency. The lower leaves of the plant will naturally tend downwards this is normal and a sign that your plant is healthy. However, there are two factors to keep into considerations: ![]() Within two to three days, you can expect them to gain enough vigor to sustain themselves. If only the youngest leaves of your Ficus Lyrata are drooping down, you should not worry too much. However, this is not an annual behavior, as usually, younger leaves have a more fragile composition and tissue than older ones. Often, as these grow even larger, they start to point downward and look weak. However, it is not uncommon to notice the youngest leaves starting to droop down after a few days. If you have noticed new leaves on your Fiddle Leaf Fig plant, undoubtedly, this is a sign that your plant is healthy and thriving. Restoring the beauty of your Fiddle Leaf Fig is not a difficult task, and even not-so-expert growers can attempt it, try out the methods below! Young Leaves Drooping Down Unhealthy drooping should not be confused with the natural tendency of the lowest leaves to lean downwards. Why are Fiddle Leaf Fig leaves drooping down? There are four possible reasons for your Fiddle Leaf Fig leaves drooping down: ![]() Luckily, it is possible to restore its beauty quickly in a few simple steps. However, as their leaves become drooping and wilted, you might not be able to enjoy the charm of this plant any longer. Fiddle Leaf Fig trees are beautiful plants that can light up any room or home. When you look at what these apps offer, and then compare TextExpander’s pricing, you see the problem. Todoist, a task manager, with Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and web clients, $29 per year.Evernote, with clients for just about every platform, offering one free tier and two paid tiers, $25 and $50 per year.Adobe Creative Cloud, and, in particular, its photography package, which includes Photoshop and Lightroom, $120 per year.Google Apps for Work, $50 a year for email, Google Drive, and a suite of productivity apps.Microsoft Office, $100 per year for home users, for up to five computers, 5 tablets, and 5 smartphones. But $47 is just too much to pay for what this app does, especially when there are excellent alternatives, such as TypeIt4Me.Ī number of apps and services are sold as subscriptions. This is roughly how much I have spent on the app and upgrades, averaged over time. I have long used TextExpander, and would be willing to pay, say, $20 a year for the app. The real issue here is not so much that of whether a subscription is good or bad, but of its cost, and its value to users. In addition, the race-to-the-bottom pricing that we’re seeing with the App Store model is preventing developers from making enough profits. It’s important to support independent developers, to ensure that the Mac and iOS ecosystems have excellent apps. ![]() I have gladly upgraded TextExpander every time there was a new version, even if the changes weren’t important to me. I don’t contest the fact that developers need income. Consumers, however, see this recurring payment as often stifling innovation once a company has guaranteed income, and users are locked into an app, they are unlikely to switch, and the developer has little incentive to improve their products. Developers may say that they don’t have to hold back features for a major upgrade, and can add new features at any time, since the subscription includes every upgrade to the apps. This has raised the question of when software should be sold as a subscription. Is there anything in this upgrade to TextExpander that is compelling to individual users? My guess is that Smile has a lot of large business customers who will welcome the shared snippets and team management of their higher-priced offer, but how many individuals actually want to share snippets, or need their snippets to be stored on the web? Dropbox syncing is fine it allows me to share the same snippets on my iMac and my MacBook. While there are interesting features for teams – shared text snippets, which can make it easier for employees in a company to stay on message – even this version of the software costs about $100 per year, per employee. The company defends this pricing by explaining that they’ve moved the management of the software’s data to a web server, but for most individuals, this service is unnecessary. From a one-off purchase of $35 – plus upgrades every couple of years, usually at about half that price – Smile Software has moved to a monthly subscription service that would cost $47.52 per year. The excellent Mac utility app TextExpander is moving to a subscription pricing model, and this is creating a dialogue about the justification for such a model. |
